Hello everyone. Welcome to another Five-Minute Leader. Today, I want to talk about the difference between excellence and accommodation and how to balance both of those things. This, I think, is a big challenge in the workplace today.
First, let's define what these things actually are. Accommodation, if you're a leader inside of an organization, is basically the idea of accommodating the needs and wants of your employees. For example, if an employee is asking to work from home for a certain day, accommodating that request. If an employee is asking for a certain perk, benefit, or a change to something, trying to accommodate that as well.
On the other hand, excellence is about maintaining high standards of merit and competence. The challenge is: How do you make sure you accommodate employee needs while also maintaining and focusing on excellence?
This is a recurring theme I’ve talked about quite a bit, especially in the realm of well-being and perks. While it’s not exactly the same, it’s a similar issue. One of the challenges I see inside organizations, especially in HR, is that we are, in a way, becoming the new parents for employees.
