I Never Worked For A Great Leader
My parents came from The Republic of Georgia, a small country that used to be a part of the former U.S.S.R. They met in Italy, were married in Australia (which is where I was born), end settled in the U.S.A. They came to this country with no money and without speaking English. My dad had to learn English by watching the Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin shows with Russian to English translation dictionary. I grew up being taught the value of hard work, having a vision, and being a leader. Unfortunately, those lessons never stuck.
I was always a terrible student until I got to college at UCSC where I graduated with a double B.A. in business management economics and psychology. I was excited to join the corporate world and took a job in downtown LA where I had a 3 hour daily commute. I took the job because I was promised that I’d be working on impactful things, meeting with executives, and learning and growing. A few months in, I was doing cold-calling and PowerPoint presentations. One day the CEO of the company told me he had something important he needed me to do. I ran over to him and he handed me $10 and told me to go to Starbucks and get him coffee. That was one of the last corporate jobs I ever had over 16 years ago.
