Welcome back to another leadership hack. Today's leadership hack actually comes from Dr. James Downing. He's the president and CEO of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and his leadership hack is all about developing a leadership framework. I've actually interviewed Dr. James Downing a couple of times. He was in my last book, The Future Leader. He appeared as a guest on my podcast. He's also making an appearance in my upcoming book as well, on leadership and vulnerability.
His leadership hack is really around creating some structure around leadership. Now, if you're not familiar with Dr. James Downing or his organization, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, it is exactly what it sounds like. It's a research hospital for children, primarily focused on a lot of really, really difficult and tough diseases like cancer. Dr. Downing is responsible for a $13 billion effort to accelerate research into children's cancer treatments.
Let me read you a quick quote from him before we dive into his leadership hack. He says, "There aren't that many leadership lessons, but listening to them over and over and over again and developing a framework in which you can apply those when you need to apply them, that takes real practice and takes constant effort and sort of constant variations on those themes as you hear them from different people."
