Hey everyone, welcome to today's Five-Minute Leader.

Today, I want to talk about this concept of “safety third.” I think it was a couple of days ago, or maybe a week ago, I was listening to a very interesting interview with Mike Rowe on Joe Rogan's podcast. Mike Rowe is the host, or the former host, of the show Dirty Jobs, and in the interview, he was talking about this idea of safety third.

It’s an interesting concept because we keep hearing about this idea of safety first. As they were talking about this on the podcast, Mike Rowe said, “Let’s be honest, it’s not safety first because if it were safety first, you wouldn’t be doing that job to begin with.”

They went on and discussed the idea that you can be in compliance but still in danger, and it really made me think about a lot of things in relation to leadership. I took a couple of notes here that I wanted to share with you—two specific elements from that interview that I thought were very interesting.

To me, the idea of safety third and the idea of being in compliance but not out of danger means a few things. First, let’s think about this idea of how you can be in compliance but still in danger?
