Hey, everyone, welcome to today's five minute leader, I am here in Chicago, I'm giving a talk tomorrow, you can see that it's pouring rain, you will probably see some lightning behind me. The weather is interesting, I promise it was beautiful when I got here. And now it looks like this.

So today's five minute leader, I want to talk about employee engagement. So recent numbers came out from Gallup, which show that the employee engagement numbers are at an 11 year low. And there are a lot of articles that are coming out, they're talking about what organizations can do to drive employee engagement. And whenever you see these articles, part of me goes a little bit crazy, because I feel like we've gotten to a point in the corporate world, where we assume that it's the leaders and the organizations that are responsible for everything. It's the company that's responsible for your well being. It's the company that's responsible for your employee engagement. It's the company that's responsible for your purpose and meaning, the company is responsible for everything, the company is basically like your parent that is supposed to take care of all the needs that you have.

Where are the conversations, talking about the accountability and responsibility that the employees have for these things? Now, I'll get into the other stuff in another video, but specifically for employee engagement. Why aren't we talking about what can employees do to make sure that they're engaged in their jobs? Why is it always up to the company? Why does the company have to give you perks and flexible work? And you know, this and that, where's your rolling your responsibility?
